Jonas Schuett
SHEC (Safety, Health, Environment, Community) Operations Specialist, Anglo American

Vice-Chair, AME Health & Safety Committee
Jonas entered mining in 2011, where he was driven to learn the industry from the (under)ground up. He began as an underground diamond driller assistant for Boart Longyear (Red Lake, Ontario), where he soon became a driller and then Safety and Health generalist. While working in the field of safety Jonas quickly developed a passion for Safety, Health and Environment. This inspired him to pursue a College Diploma in OHS. Driven to learn more about mining and related risks, Jonas secured a role with De Beers Canada – Exploration where, for 5 years, he was responsible for managing Safety, Health, Environment, and Community risks. Over the course of his employment with De Beers Jonas became proficient at systematic Operational Risk Management, driving a proactive safety culture through building trust and visible felt leadership, managing their OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 Management Systems, and championing continual improvement efforts through technology. In 2019, Jonas accepted a role as Safety, Health and Risk Advisor for SSR Mining here in Vancouver. His responsibilities included supporting the VP of Safety & Risk to develop and implementation of the Safety, Health, Security, and Risk Management strategic plan, and support three sites across the Americas it’s rollout. He also sourced, tested, scoped and began the rollout of a software solution to help the organization better track and manage their risks and incidents. Recently, Jonas has joined Anglo American, acting as a SHEC Operations Specialist for global Discovery team.

Prior to his entry in mining he worked as a curriculum developer and teacher in Chile, where he learned to speak Spanish fluently. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a Specialist in Bioethics and Philosophy from the University of Toronto, and a Diploma in OHS from Conestoga College. He is also a certified Divemaster.
